New year, new Pantone shade

Why ‘Very Peri’ for 2022? Every year Pantone announces its ‘Colour of the Year’ but what does this mean for brands and designers? How exactly does the global colour authority select a colour to personify a year exactly?

Well, according to Pantone, its Colour of the Year is all about reflecting what’s taking place in our global culture. Consider it colour therapy for the masses.

This year’s selection is PANTONE 17-3938, or the catchier ‘Very Peri’. Pantone describes the shade as “a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone”, but most of us consider the shade to be somewhere on the purple scale.

Pantone believes that the shade is spritely and joyous (who couldn’t use some joy in 2022?) and explores creativity and imagination.

Digital design guiding the Pantone Colour of the Year

With the metaverse opening its virtual doors. And NFTs giving the Louvre a run for its money, Pantone has leaned into digital design when creating Very Peri.

According to Pantone, its new shade has been guided by this merging of the virtual and the real. With digital design truly creating ‘new colour possibilities.

Very Peri pop culture moments

Very Peri in fashion & beauty

With And Just Like That bringing back Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic wardrobe to our screens. It only seems right that she’s rocking a Fendi Baguette again! Which the brand has re-launched in the same sequin style. It’s very on-trend for 2022!

While pared-down, natural skin is growing in popularity, so is sparkle and glitter! Rather than focusing on perfection, beauty in 2022 is set to be all about fun and embellishments (according to Pinterest).

Think modern and futuristic design paired with lots of different textures and textiles. Pantone says the shade works well “from shimmery metallics, lustrous sheens and high-tech materials to handcrafted looks and natural fibers”.

Technology

In line with what I mentioned earlier about Very Peri being a shade led by digital design. It’s only right that Pantone has partnered with blockchain network Tezos to release a collection of NFTs designed by artist Polygon1993 using the colour.

Speaking of the shade in regards to digital design, Pantone says: “ Very Peri exudes a good-natured warmth that quickly engages the eye, making it an ideal shade for many applications of graphic and multimedia design as well as packaging.”

Design

From event design to interiors, digital and product design, it’s fair to say Very Peri will make an impact next year.

Some notable 2021 design moments include online grocer Ocado rebranding from green to purple as its main brand colour and Apple launching its iPhone 12 in a purple shade (while millennials cry out for pink).

Speaking on design generally, Pantone says: “Very Peri is paired with versatile hues in a series of four palettes, available to designers as inspiration to incorporate into designs via the Pantone Connect digital colour platform.”

Will you be incorporating Very Peri into your brand strategy for 2022? Let me know!
