Pinterest SEO: How to do keyword research on Pinterest

Is SEO a ‘thing’ on Pinterest?

Absolutely! Pinterest is essentially an inspiration search engine. This means that like with keyword research for website copy, you can do keyword research on Pinterest to find appropriate terms to help more Pinterest users find your content.

Still not convinced you should be using Pinterest as part of your content marketing strategy? According to the platform over 400 million people use Pinterest every month to inspire their purchases. It’s also worth noting that 46% of weekly Pinners have discovered a new brand or product on Pinterest too!

How to find keywords for Pinterest SEO

There are a few ways to find relevant keywords on Pinterest. Here are my two go-to ways to do Pinterest SEO:

Option one: through ad creation

To use this method, you need to have a Pinterest Business account. There is no cost associated with this, and we won’t actually be launching an ad!

Step 1) On the top navigation click on ‘ads’ and then ‘create ad’

Step 2) Select a ‘campaign objective’ as we aren’t running the ad, this doesn’t matter too much, I always select ‘consideration’

Step 3) Scroll past everything else on page one, and press ‘continue

Step 4) On the next page you have to choose ‘targeting details’, select ‘find new customers’, this will unlock keyword searching

Step 5) Once you’ve chosen the ‘targeting strategy’ scroll to ‘interests & keywords’

Step 6) From here, you can select ‘add keywords’ and start exploring keywords. In this example, I’ve used ‘social media marketing’. The ad creator then shows you relevant keywords and the number of monthly searches. You can then start collating a list of keywords for your content!

Option two: through search

This is a slightly simpler method but is still helpful when it comes to Pinterest SEO!

Step 1) Simply head to your home feed on Pinterest and press the magnifying glass to unlock the search bar.

Step 2) Start playing with the search, inputting key terms and seeing what relevant searches appear. It’s also worth looking at the content that appears and see how your competitors are using key terms on Pinterest too!

Are you active on Pinterest? Do you use either of these techniques to carry out Pinterest SEO?
